How We Relate

What do you do when you have a problem?

Some of us find a quiet place and reflect on all the information we have and rely on our inner wisdom to help us through.  Others of us call sixteen of our closest friends and talk through the problem, using the synergy of shared wisdom.

There is no right or wrong way to work through a dilemma.  How you approach this problem solving task depends on how your brain is wired.  For many people a sampling of both approaches offers the best solution.

Your brain needs stimulation from others.  We are herd creatures.  We need each other.

This fact affects how our brain functions as well.  People (or rats) who live in isolation (the rats are called "cage potatoes" in the scientific experimental world) do not thrive and fall into a lethargy or mind and body.  When these rats are placed with other rats and are given stimulation, they begin to thrive and show more energy and develop shiny coats and bright eyes.  It is the same with us.

Solitary confinement is one of the harshest forms of punishment.  It is reserved for those who go beyond the realm of normal incarceration.  Lack of human contact is devastating.

So what’s a person to do?

Several rights answers you might consider:

  • attend social hours in the community
  • join a learning group, book or garden club
  • take a class on something you want to learn
  • call a friend
  • go to exercise classes (there are levels for all of us)
  • attend lectures (many community talks are free)
  • volunteer at something you have an interest in

The ideas are limited only by your desires.  Get out and get involved.  You will interact, meet new people, learn new things and not become a "cage potato".  All of these answers are good for your brain.
